Brake maintenance is an integral part of regular vehicle maintenance. If you notice any signs of wear or tear on your brakes, it’s best to have them checked out by one of our expert mechanics as soon as possible. The last thing you want is to drive down the highway and suddenly find yourself unable to stop in time due to faulty brake components! If you suspect your brakes, it’s time to bring your car into Yorba Linda Auto Service. To be sure, we’ll list some of the top signs your car needs new brakes below.

1. Listen for grinding sounds

When you use your brakes, it’s normal to hear some noise. But grinding is a sign of a more serious issue and should be taken seriously. Grinding can lead to brake failure, which could be dangerous for you and other drivers on the road. If you’re hearing grinding noises, you must get your brakes checked as soon as possible.

If your brakes are squealing or grinding, it’s time to check them out. You can also check for loose bolts on the caliper – these can cause squeaking sounds when you apply the brakes. Also, check for excessive play in wheel bearings or other components that might make noise when driving.

2. Try to notice any changes in the steering wheel

If you feel any shifting in the steering wheel when braking, or if you feel an abnormal pressure on the pedal, it could be a sign that something is wrong with your brake system.

Be observant of how your pedal feels.

3. The pedal shouldn’t feel “soft”

Another way to tell if your brakes need replacement is by assessing the pedal. Brake pedals should be firm and responsive, without pulsing or shaking. If you press down on your brake pedal and it feels mushy or soft, that’s a sign that some fluid may leak out from somewhere inside your brake system.

When the brake pedal has no resistance whatsoever (sometimes referred to as “spongy”), this could mean that some air has entered into the hydraulic system of your car’s brakes or that one of its parts is worn down beyond repair. Either way, it’s time for new ones!

4. Watch for stopping distance changes

Your vehicle should also stop at its usual stopping distance (depending on how much weight is in the car). If it takes longer than usual for your car to come to a complete stop, there may be issues with either your tires, suspension or brakes themselves.
