It’s a great idea for everyone to have a first-aid kit in their car. A first-aid kit can be a life-saver when traveling, and may even come in handy for when you’re out and about. In addition to being readily available when an emergency strikes, having a first aid kit on hand helps prevent small injuries from becoming major ones. Below, we go over a list of some basics for your vehicle’s first aid kit.
1. Gauze
Gauze is a thin, soft fabric that covers wounds and provides support. Gauze comes in various sizes and can be found in packages of varying quantities (usually 10 yards or 50 yards). This can come in handy for scraped knees at the park or for head injuries.
2. Bandages
Bandages have several uses, including holding gauze, splints, and even keeping your bandages in place. If a wound is bleeding profusely and you don’t have a tourniquet on hand, you can use a bandage to stop the bleeding until help arrives paired with the gauze. Additionally, you’ll be surprised how many times people need a bandaid in public and there isn’t one to be found!
3. Flushable Wipes
Many people don’t realize that you can use flushable wipes for more than just cleaning up after bathroom breaks. These versatile cleaning tools can be used for a variety of purposes in your first-aid kit, including:
- Cleaning wounds and applying bandages or other medical tape
- Washing hands and equipment
- Clearing up spills (including vomit) on the ground or in vehicles
- Wiping off surfaces when they get dirty (such as seat cushions)
These would be great to keep on hand in general!
4. Disposable gloves
Disposable gloves are an important part of any first-aid kit. They help prevent the spread of germs, especially when dealing with wounds and open sores. They also protect your hands from direct contact with blood, vomit, feces, and other bodily fluids that could transmit harmful viruses or bacteria.
5. Scissors, tweezers, and other tools
These will come in handy if you need to cut away clothing or pull splinters out of someone’s hand. Your kit should include scissors, tweezers, and even needle nose pliers. And if you want to be extra prepared, look for a scalpel. You can also find some other specialty items, such as tongue depressors used for holding ice packs on injuries when they begin to swell. A pair of tick pullers may be important if you go camping a lot, too.
6. Sunscreen and bug spray
Bug spray is another item that should be in your first-aid kit should you find yourself in an area with lots of mosquitoes or other biting insects because bug bites not only itch but also increase your chances of catching illnesses like West Nile Virus, Zika Virus, and Lyme Disease.
